Grandmother Mere Racule’s endeavour to utilise a hobby for financial success was not easy sailing.

At every opportunity she gets to share her knowledge she also inspires other women regardless of the circumstance they are in.

The grandmother of 11 has been teaching design and sewing the last 20 years.

“Doing something you are good at and making money is rewarding especially when you started from scratch,” Ms Racule said.

“I have always encouraged women to become independent and use their skills to earn for themselves.”

The 74-year-old woman of Yasawa origin had scooped the best Overall Textile Display at the 2015 National Women’s Expo.

She will be among the 500 displaying their handicraft, contemporary and textile designs at the National Women’s Expo beginning on Wednesday.

Her work started when her husband, a joiner has sustained injuries from work and was not paid for two months while recovering at home.

“Sewing was always my hobby, and at that time of need I took it up, designed and sewed. Now I have orders from as far as America,” she said.

With extensive knowledge on sewing and design she has shared her knowledge to many as she had taught as a craft teacher at the Sote Vocational School in Delainavesi and later at various Women’s groups and church places.

Ms Racule is also a member of Fiji Arts Council and has been displaying her work at various platforms awarded by the Council.

“In 2015 when I won the best textile display award, I received $1500 for which I bought bales of materials and it motivated me further,” Ms Racule said.

Now her two daughter-in-laws help her in the making of the bed sheets, quilts, bedcovers, comforters, handicrafts and ladies handbags.

At her tent at Vodafone Area this week, she will showcase her handiwork under the Nasole Women’s Group banner.
