South Island Shipping operations manager Ben Cavu said the Liahona I had two more franchise trips to serve before the scheme ends this month.

He said the vessel had left for its last franchise run to lower southern Lau – Kabara, Fulaga, Ogea and Vatoa on Monday (June 13).

“It will be back in Suva on June 17,” he said.

He said there were not enough passengers for the Lau trip.

According to Mr Cavu at around this time of the year the passenger count is low because people are not travelling.

The next franchise trip he said would be to Batiki, Nairai and Gau on June 20.

“It will return on June 23.”

According to Mr Cavu when the franchise scheme ends this month, they have been assured that it would be replaced by contracts.

“There are new contracts being formulated to give at the end of the franchise trips, probably by the end of the month.”

He said they would be given more information on these contracts for franchise trips.

Mr Cavu thanked Government for scheme as they were able to give service to uneconomical routes.

He said they were thankful to be part of the scheme.
