522 Counts Of Serious Sexual  Offences From May 2016-2017

The following data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

This media update includes data released by the ODPP from May 2016 to May 2017.

This data is confined to incidents of serious sexual offences only.

There were a total of 231 people charged with a total of 522 separate counts of serious sexual offences as of May 2017. There were 16 people charged that were under the age of 18 years.

The offences were rape (384), attempted rape (10), assault with intent to rape (8), abduction with an intent to rape (3), indecent assault (12), incest (5), defilement (6) and sexual assault (94).

There were 246 victims of the 522 separate sexual offences. Of the 246 offences, there were 151 victims under the age of 18 years.

To date, the youngest victims of serious sexual offences are 1 year 10 months and 1 year 11 months old and the accused persons were the father and grandfather of the victims.

There were 86 offences that occurred in domestic relationships or where the accused were known to the victims.

Additionally, there were charges of unlawful wounding, criminal trespass as part of the act of rape and indecently annoying a female. (NB: These statistics are not included in the statistics table).
