The Fijian Government has plans to further bolster trade and investment in key sectors between New Zealand and Fiji.

Making the comment at the Fiji-New Zealand and New Zealand-Fiji Business Councils meeting in Auckland was Fiji’s Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Koya.

Mr Koya said: “Such events provide valuable opportunities for the business communities from both Fiji and New Zealand to exchange views and ideas and look at avenues to enhance trade and investment.

Mr Koya said despite significant odds, Fiji had demonstrated its resilience with a strong economic output and performance over the past 12 months.

“As you may be aware, Fiji has experienced seven straight years of economic growth – the longest in Fijian history, with a forecast of 3.8 per cent growth this year, which will make it eight years of consecutive growth.

“This growth has been enabled by the stable and consistent, pro-business and pro-growth policies of the Fijian Government and driven by the persistence, determination, sheer grit and resilience of the Fijian people.

“I certainly urge all of you who are already doing business in Fiji to consider expanding your operations to ride this wave of prosperity.”

He added Fiji would be opening a Trade Commission Office in Auckland shortly that would be staffed and providing resources to effectively promote trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.

“In the period from 2010–2016, New Zealand accounted for approximately 12 percent or $5.17 billion worth of merchandise trade for Fiji. In 2016, Fiji’s trade with New Zealand was $978.9 million, which accounts for 14 percent of the Fiji’s total trade during that year,” Mr Koya said.
