The members of Drenunu Women’s Club in Tavuki, Kadavu rely solely  on their handicrafts as their source of income.

Forty-nine-year-old Livia Tuvoli was part of the 15-member group who came from their village, Solodamu, to be a part of the 2017 National Women’s Expo at the Vodafone Arena.

She said: “These mats and crafts are our only source of income to earn a bit more than what we earn from fishing and farming vegetables.

“Sometimes, it gets hard for us to sell our items in the urban areas because we also have to take out the cost of travelling to Suva.

“These mats and crafts are not easy to make, but we are fortunate that the men in the village help us with our works so that we can bring more money for the family.

“For us women, it is not easy to manage our chores, work on the farm, go out fishing and weave mats as well but together we manage to help each other and the money we earn is equally shared amongst us all.

“It is a struggle for us to send our children to school because sometimes we do not have any funds to buy books, uniforms or school bags and shoes but we never lose hope because we know that when we lose hope, our children will too.

“That is the reason why we are here today to help them and our families so we can have a stable lifestyle too,” Ms Tuvoli said.
