A 54 year old woman of Naicobi road near Sonaisali in Nadi is grateful to a driver of a nearby resort who saved them from the fire that engulfed their home yesterday morning.

The family was asleep when the fire started from one side of the house before completely destroying the two flats.

The fire has left the 10 people living in the four bedroom timber corrugated house homeless.

One of the tenants Wainikiti Rosini, 54, said they were asleep when they heard a vehicle tooting its horn from the road side.

“Returning from the Bible study we went straight to bed,” Ms Rosini said.

“In my sleep I dreamt that someone was calling my name and I woke up, instantly I smelt smoke and heard someone shouting fire.

“I woke the others in the house to run outside to save our life. We managed to save our mobile phone, and my husband’s guitar. Suppose if no one woke us up I don’t want to think about it.”

The fire broke out around 3am and no one was at the other flat when the incident happened.

“I guess we are lucky through that passing driver who saw the smoke and alerted us otherwise it would have been worse,” she added.

The fire truck arrived at the scene but was too late.

Meanwhile, the National Fire Authority is still investigating the cause of the fire.
