Vamarasi: Teach for Interest, Not for Fun

I would rather teach the person who has an interest to learn rather than learning for fun, says Maraana Vamarasi.

The 52-year-old of Oinafa, Rotuma works with the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation teaching arts and crafts to rural women in Nadi.

She was amongst the 500 women who showcased their handicrafts at the third 2017 National Women’s Expo at Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday.

Ms Vamarasi said it was different to learn with an interest and completely different to learn just for fun.

“I love doing my job as a trainer and I love training and teaching people about the culture, arts and crafts of our country,” she said.

“I am inspired when I see those women empower themselves and it is crucial for the economy of the country.

“Our country’s strength and beauty lies in its diversity and we have so many different cultures co-existing here.

“It is the rural women who have the opportunity to bring out the authenticity of every culture in their designs and creativeness.

“We women, we aim to get the Fijian Sewn licence on our products so that we can produce high quality items as we progress in our small businesses and showcase them even at a bigger platform in the future,” Ms Vamarasi said.
