Fiji will host the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships in Suva.

The dates will be confirmed by the IWF later but the event will see around 500 athletes and team officials from more than 50 countries taking part. The IWF executive board unanimously decided to award the hosting rights to Weightlifting Fiji during its meeting in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday.

Fiji’s bid was presented by Weightlifting Fiji president Atma Maharaj and Isikeli Mataitoga, Ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Fiji to Japan.

Mataitoga briefed the meeting about the very strong support from the Government for sports in Fiji and in particular for weightlifting and for Fiji’s bid to host the JWC. He presented the letter of support from the Minister of Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou to the meeting.

The IWF president Dr Tamas Ajan and Secretary-General Mohammed Jalood spoke enthusiastically about their warm welcome and the high quality of the Continental Qualification event for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games which Fiji hosted.

This helped the newly elected executive board to gain confidence in Fiji’s ability to host this world event.

Maharaj advised the meeting that Dr. Robin Mitchell, Oceania National Olympic Committees president and patron of Weightlifting Fiji has agreed to take the position of organizing committee chairman. This demonstrated the calibre of our organizing team and added to the level of confidence for the executive board members.

This is the first time since 1993 hosted in Melbourne, Australia that a country from the Oceania region and first time ever for a Pacific Island to organize an IWF WorldChampionships.

Together with the IWF Executive Board and committees, technical officials, parents and supporters, this number is expected to exceed 700.

Weightlifting Fiji applauds the support of Dr Ajan, Jalood, Attila Adamfi, IWF executive director and and Marcus Stephen, president of Oceania Weightlifting Federation, Fiji Government, Fijian National Sports Commission, Tourism Fiji; Dr Robin Mitchell, Mataitoga, Kelera Savu and WF admin committee, Sikeli Tuinamuana, Della Shaw-Elder, Chris Yee and Ritesh Ratiram, who all worked closely behind the scenes to prepare Fiji’s successful bid.
