Tears flowed freely for Jai Prasad when he learned that the assessors found him not guilty of rape.

The 35-year-old radio announcer’s fate, however, will be decided on Monday when High Court Judge, Justice Vincent Perera, will give his judgment.

Yesterday, the assessors found Prasad not guilty of one count of rape. Before the assessors gave their verdict, Justice Perera summed up the case.

He said he had only highlighted points which he found were important in the evidence. This included various inconsistencies highlighted in the evidence of the complainant.

He also told the court about the elements of the case which needed to be proved by the prosecution, which was, that the accused had sex with the complainant without her consent.

Prasad is alleged to have raped a neighbour on July 2014.
