The Ministry of Agriculture is organising field days yesterday in the Northern, Western and Central Divisions marking World Day to Combat Desertification.

Combat Desertification day is observed to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality can be achieved through strengthened community participation and cooperation at all levels.

In the Northern Division, the Field Day is at Narayabale Village while in the Central Division, it is at the Ministry of Agriculture’s Koronivia Research Station.

In the Western Division, the Field Day is at Tikowale’s Sustainable Land Management Demo Farm in Drasa, Lautoka.

With the slogan “Our Land, Our Home, Our Future,” the event aims to promote public awareness on international efforts to combat desertification and the effects of drought.

In Fiji more than 90 per cent of the economy depends on climate sensitive natural resources such as sandy beaches, tropical forests and rain fed subsistence agriculture.

Improving yields and land productivity will increase food security and income for farmers but this in turn could cause unnecessary movements of people and reduce current and potential conflicts over scarce resources in degraded areas.

Fiji is committed to the implementation of activities to combat land desertification or land degradation.

This SLM offers young people with vast opportunities for income generation in sectors such as agriculture, food processing and tourism.
