Police are now looking to expand their cell block at the Suva courthouse.

Police chief of operations Assistant Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, said there was a need for more space to keep remand prisoners because the numbers continued to rise.

Yesterday, ACP Tudravu and his team met the Chief Magistrate and Registrar General to discuss the matter with them.

“We have experienced that the number of remand prisoners coming in is sometimes more than 80 and we need to look into ways in which can help solve this issue” he said.

Last week, for instance, a remand prisoner escaped from the hands of Police while he was being escorted from Magistrates Court five to Court three.

ACP Tudravu said the search for him was on and that the internal investigations were also underway to determine how he escaped.

At the moment, the Police Special Response Unit has been deployed in order to beef up security and assist the team at the cell block.

“The only focus now is to see if there are other spaces we can use to make cell blocks for remand prisoners,” he said.
