Taniela Rainibogi, 19, and coach Joe Vueti head to Tokyo, Japan today for the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships.

Rainibogi will be competing in the 85kg category with 30 competitors on Tuesday.

Rainibogi said; “I’m excited and focused on the task ahead. My aim is to better my best performance total of 286kg which I achieved while training in New Caledonia in February.”

Eileen Cikamatana, who is currently training in Rome, Italy, after the French Open International, will join them in Tokyo on Monday.

Cikamatana will be competing on Thursday in the 90kg category. She will aim to improve on her 237kg lift she recorded in Noumea in April. She is the current holder of the Commonwealth junior and senior records in the newly established 90kg category.

Cikamatana will be looking towards building on her performance at the World Youth Championships last year, where she won a gold and bronze medal.

This will be the first World Junior Championships for Fiji to participate in so it will be an uphill battle for the two athletes.

The competition would be held at the Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo.

The competition will also serve as a preparatory exercise for the young athletes to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games qualifier to be held in September in Australia.
