The sunken, MV Sinu-i-Wasa I in Levuka will soon be refloated and towed away.

This was confirmed by Fiji Ports Corporation Limited chief executive officer, Vajira Piyasena.

Mr Piyasena said he received confirmation on Thursday from vessel owner, Venu Shipping Limited.

“The vessel will be refloated and towed away and then it will be scuttled in an area that is away from any hassle to navigation,” he said.

He also confirmed that the area for scuttling will be confirmed by the Maritime Safety Authority (MSAF).

“We don’t know about the cost because that is being handled by the vessel owner, Venu Shipping and we have asked the owners to remove the vessel and when it’s removed the cost will be given by the owners.”

Mr Piyasena also confirmed that the insurance company for the sunken vessel, MV Southern Phoenix at the Suva Harbour has called for tenders for its removal.

Attempts to get comments from Venu Shipping general manger, Ben Naidu were unsuccessful when this article went to print.

The vessel, Sinu-i-Wasa I sank while berthed at Levuka Wharf during Tropical Cyclone Winston in February last year and its sister ship Sinu-i-Wasa III also ran aground in Ovalau.
