The University of Fiji is working towards making the university a green and environmentally friendly campus.

On this note, it launched its Green Campus initiative on the eve of World Environment Day earlier this month.

Co-ordinator Green UniFiji Dr Ajantha Perera said that the university was planning to carry out various activities in the lead-up to becoming a Green Campus.

“UniFiji will be developing a system for waste separation to paper, bottles, tins and cans, plastics, and biodegradables,” Dr Perera said.

“We will be selling some of the waste collected at a small price. The biodegradable waste will be put into compost bins. The compost will be used for our own gardening.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Prem Misir said that the initiative part of the strategic plan for the university.

“The Strategic Plan of the University of Fiji drives the university to reach its vision. Among the eight strategic themes within the Strategic Plan of the University of Fiji is the Environmental and Social Responsibilities theme,” he said.

“The purpose of this theme is to ensure that our graduates will develop an environmentally responsible attitude. The best way to inculcate such an attitude is to provide an environmentally friendly atmosphere within the campus.

“It also falls in line with the Fijian Government’s plan on the environment as well as the lead-up to COP23. UniFiji, as its way of contributing to awareness and knowledge of COP23 and environmental protection, is hosting monthly awareness sessions.”
