The Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar yesterday paid tribute to those who have contributed blood to those in need of it.

She said regular blood donors are the foundation and strength of our blood services.

“Today is our opportunity to salute and thank blood donors in Fiji and around the world,” Ms Akbar said during World Blood Donor Day celebration at Tavua District School.

“They may come from different parts of our society, but one thing that binds them and recognises them all is their generous heart.

“(We thank them for their) unwavering commitment to save lives by putting others before themselves, the effort to save human lives, to restore hope, happiness and provide the gift of life.

“We often hear about calls for people to donate blood after major disasters or catastrophes – and that is obviously important.

“But, we also need to recogonise that donated blood is needed every day in our hospitals as our doctors and nurses go about their routine work of caring for sick and injured patients.”

A march was organised to create awareness on the importance of donating blood and how people can save lives in doing so.

It goes in line with this year’s theme: What can you do? Give Blood, Give Now, Give Often.

She added that the partnership with Fiji National Blood Services and non-government organisations (NGO’s), Ministry of Health and Medical Services had so far built a network with over 15,000 blood donors in Fiji.

They looked forward to expanding their network with the passage of time.
