The Ministry of Fisheries is now in the final stages of reviewing and formalising the National Fisheries Policy.

Minister Semi Koroilavesau said the policy would have separate sets of implementation framework within the 10-year timeline of the policy, which in itself, had been the missing link since the first Fisheries Laws of Fiji (the Fisheries Act, Cap 158) enacted in 1942.

He said: “The proposed vision that is outlined within the current draft National Fisheries Policy focuses on ‘a sustainable, and well managed fisheries, that provides long term economic, social, ecological and food security benefits to all Fijian communities’.”

He said the vision on the draft policy was supported by a mission statement that highlighted the use of participative approaches to provide transparent and accountable fisheries management and development services. And the ministry and sector being mandated as a trusted provider, to achieve economic growth, food security and sustainable livelihoods.

The policy is envisaged to be formalised before October 30, 2017. This would encompass the development and management of three main sub-sectors which are:

  1. i) Coastal Fisheries;
  2. ii) Offshore Fisheries; and

iii) Aquaculture,
