Meet Jiaoji Waqabaca, one of the 13 King contestants at this year’s Vodafone Hibiscus Festival.

His advocacy message is: Gender equality for our women and their contribution in the agriculture sector.

“Women play a significant role in any economy and they are regarded as the backbone of the rural scene.

“And for that I would like to pay tribute to those women who give their children, their husbands, their families more meaning to life.”

WHO IS JIAOJI WAQABACA?

The 23-year-old is originally from Cicia Island, Lau. He was born and raised in Cicia and has five siblings.

He attended Mabula District School and Cicia High School.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the Fiji National University and currently works as a project officer marketing with the Ministry of Agriculture.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST REACTION WHEN YOU WERE TOLD THAT YOU were ONE OF THE KING CONTESTANTS?

Jiaoji: I was really surprised and excited at the same time.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AT THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL?

Jiaoji: Getting to know more people and sharing my advocacy message to the people of Fiji.

HAS IT EVER CROSSED YOUR MIND GROWING UP AND WATCHING THE FESTIVAL THAT ONE DAY YOU’LL BE A PART OF IT?

Jiaoji: Yes, when I came to Suva to further my studies at the Fiji National University in 2012 I never missed going to the festival and watching the contestants. And that’s how I saw myself that one day I too would be taking part on that same stage.

Apart from your current position, what do you like doing in your past time?

Jiaoji: I spend time with my family and relatives, doing fun activities with friends like hiking, swimming and watching movies.

WHO IS YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION BY FAR?

Jiaoji: My mother and father are my greatest inspirations. They have supported me throughout my life and through their support and inspiration today I have been able to accomplish many things.

What are some of the challenges in your line of work?

Jiaoji: High competition in the work place, pressure when the specific target is not achieved, continuous improvement and unclear or inconsistent communication.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS YEAR’S HIBISCUS?

Jiaoji: I know I will take back life-changing moments and experiences and that is what I am most looking forward to.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITES?

Quote: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” -Mahatma Gandhi

Book: Hamlet by William Shakespeare

Food: Anything cooked by mom.

Song:  All of me by John Legend

Movie: The Land Has Eyes directed by Vilsoni Herenikoc

Guilty pleasure: Sitting on my boss’ chair while he’s away.
