The Vodafone Premier League 2017 competition will end on August 20. This will give time to our Vodafone Fijian football team to prepare before their international tour to Indonesia.

The VPL competition resumes this weekend. This was confirmed by Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel who said the reason for the early finish is to ensure that the national reps are free to concentrate on their international matches. Patel also mentioned that Hong Kong and Singapore have pulled out of their matches against Fiji, as to focus on the Asia Cup competition.

“The National League Board has finished their meeting and all the district officials have agreed with the fixtures and the league will end on August 20,” Patel said.

“That gives the national team time to prepare before they travel to Indonesia. Ending the league at that date ensures that all the players are injury free and are all in camp. We’re trying to confirm with Malaysia while the team will be in Indonesia.

“We’re also trying to see if we can organise a tour to Thailand as well, so everything is in its planning stages.”

NEED TO COMPLY

Patel also mentioned that districts need to comply with the association rules and produce a minimum of 10 clubs for the super premier division and six clubs for the premier division.

“Compliance issues, we want the districts to comply, if they do not then we will do to them what we did to Vatukoula where we had deregistered them,” he said.

“We will do this with other districts who don’t comply with a minimum of 10 clubs for the super premier and six clubs for the premier division. This is something the districts have to do and they have to get their club games going because once we have created the atmosphere of football with the national team and their tournaments, we ask the districts to continue with their local league as well so the fans are already engrossed with football and everybody benefits.”

The Fiji Football Association will announce the fixtures for the INKK Mobile Battle of the Giants tournament tomorrow.

“The B.O.G pool draws will be done this Wednesday, as such Labasa and Lautoka will be in different pools,” Patel said.

“We will also make sure that Dreketi does not fall in the same pool, this is the same system that FIFA follow when two teams are from the same place.”
