This year Freemasons in England, Wales, and the world over will celebrate 300 years of organised Freemasonry when the United Grand Lodge of England was formed on June 24.

Senior Freemason in Fiji Ross McDonald said on that day four Masonic Lodges combined and formed the world’s first Grand Lodge, the United Grand Lodge of England.

“The meeting took place at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern in St Paul’s Churchyard, London and elected Anthony Sayer as their first Grand Master,” Mr McDonald said.

“This first meeting was followed by the Grand Lodge of Ireland in 1725, The Grand Lodge of Scotland in 1736 and then further afield so that today there are around 200 Grand Lodges spread across the world.”

In Fiji, Robert Smith will be installed on June 24 as the 137th Master of the Lodge of Fiji. Freemasonry was established in Suva in 1881.

Mr McDonald said: “Celebrations in Fiji will culminate in the visit of Sir David Wootton in November this year when a celebration meeting of the Lodge of Fiji will be held to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the United Grand Lodge of England.”

The meeting will be followed by a banquet.

Sir David was appointed in 2014 as Assistant Grand Master to the Duke of Kent who is the Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England.
