Senior printer Hirdesh Chand and lead colour hand Joana Bueta show an example of the Fiji Sun’s latest groundbreaking introduction into the Fijian market: An MH Supermarket liftout printed using UV technology brought in from America.

This gives a glossy-like paper product from our web press. Such printing was previously only available in Fiji from commercial printers using sheetfed printing.

Fiji Sun Publisher/CEO Peter Lomas said: “Our product has been so good that not only leading local advertisers like MH have begun to use it. One of New Zealand’s leading newspaper printers has seen what we have done and is now looking at introducing this technology into their sites in New Zealand.”

The UV technology was installed on the Fiji Sun press by prominent Asia-Pacific newspaper press suppliers Webco, of Tauranga, New Zealand.

It continues the Fiji Sun’s series of firsts in Fijian newspaper production, including:

The first computer-to-plate technology;

The first four-high colour towers on the press;

The first optical plate punch and bender;

The first to be able to offer advertisers the options of full colour printing on newsprint, bond or coated paper;

And the first to install five four-high colour towers to be able to print 40-page sections in full colour.

Mr Lomas said: “We are leading. We are fortunate to have owners prepared to invest back into the Fiji Sun as we continue to grow.”
