The Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Sitiveni Rabuka is in Melbourne, Australia, and is due to return today following a fundraising drive on Saturday to raise funds to finance their campaign for next year’s elections.

The event was organized by the SODELPA Victoria Events Committee and was held at Thornbury, Melbourne.

It is believed that AU$50,000 was raised from the Island Night Buffet Dinner held at the Aboriginal Advancement League Hall.

Speaking at the event the party leader said: “I have to raise the money that is required for the whole process as compiled by our budget committee; they have come up with a figure of $1.8 million to fund for preparation for the next elections.

“As party leader I have to raise the funds to fight the election better and I am here to ask for your support,” Mr Rabuka said.

Mr Rabuka also said that SODELPA would refine its manifesto to win the hearts and souls of the nation.

“I have to put together the best messengers to be ready to take SODELPA’s campaign message and manifesto to convince the people that SODELPA is a party that has the experience, that have the capability,  that has compassionate leaders that will make Fiji free again.

He revealed that SODELPA had already received 111 applications from candidates for the 2018 elections.

“Depending on how well we conduct negotiations with other political parties, and depending on whether we go alone or go with them, we will announce the 51 or less number of candidates for the joint or the sole run for the next general elections,” he said.

Mr Rabuka said the party will be presenting to the party Management Board later this week.

“At the end of September, there will be a special general meeting where the party will make announcements of the final selection of the candidates.”

He outlined to supporters that  Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu is back in Parliament and remains party president.

Leader of Opposition Ro Teimumu Kepa continues as the leader of the Opposition.

Salote Radrodro is the new Opposition whip taking over from Ratu Isoa Tikoca who has been suspended for the rest of the life of the current Parliament.

The deputy whip is Mosese  Bulitavu and the SODELPA financial spokesperson is Aseri Radrodro.

He will also deliver the Opposition’s main reply to the budget address to the Minister for Economy.
