The 10 cents per plastic bag surcharge included in the 2017-2018 Budget announced on Thursday at the point of sale is significant because it will encourage customers to bring their own bags

Viti SUP and Va’a, a collective of Outrigger Paddlers and Stand Up paddlers partnering with the Uto Ni Yalo Trust, Fiji Outrigger Association, Fiji Yachting and Fiji Surfing Association spokesperson, Reverend James Bhagwan, said it was a first good step in addressing the issue of plastic pollution.

Reverend Bhagwan said the Fiji Council of Churches had also called for the banning of single use plastic bags.

“We also express our gratitude to the Minister of Fisheries and our Ocean Champion Semi Koroilavesau and the Department of Environment for their work on the legislation.”

He adds they also acknowledge the partnership with various environmental organisations, and the initiatives from the retailers, and manufacturers for their willingness to work together on this issue.
