The Paramount Chief of Cakaudrove, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has been re-elected as Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) president.

It was unanimously agreed to by party supporters at their Annual General Meeting at Epworth Hall in Suva yesterday.

Ratu Naiqama was first elected as party president in June, 2015.

While speaking at the event, Ratu Naiqama said some of the party members and supporters were intelligent people.

But he said, at some point in time these intelligent people should make wise decisions to pave the way forward for the party.

Those at the meeting included former Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, Queen Victoria School Old Boys Association president, Anasa Vocea, former MP, Peceli Rinakama, Opposition MPs and around five hundred party supporters.

Ratu Naiqama added that supporters present at the meeting came from as far as Vanua Levu and the Western Division.

SODELPA Opposition MP, Ratu Sela Nanovo did not attend the meeting due to an illness.

“This will be a tough meeting because some people sitting in here are smart and have their own ways of doing things, but you are all advised to make wise decisions in this meeting, not only today but till the next general elections,” Ratu Naiqama said.

“There were written proposals made by the leader but it was hardly accepted,” he said.

Ratu Naiqama reminded party supporters to put away the thinking that the most popular iTaukei would win the next general elections.

“I want to reiterate that we stop thinking that  there will be more iTaukei in the next general elections, we have an electoral process to follow and we are bound by it, no matter what we say, with the number of political parties right now, there are only 27 seats for us.

“Even if we as iTaukei vote for each other, whether you try it different ways or try to turn it, nothing will ever change, that is why we need this meeting so that we can pave a way forward to contest the next general elections,” he said.

Ratu Naiqama said other people have come to call Fiji their home which was something the party should be vigilant about.

“What we should be concerned about, is the number of votes as we try to prepare ourselves for the next elections, at the end of the day the decision rests on the supporters, their votes count, we should unite and work together, let’s fight together,” he concluded.
