Abu Bakar, 66, looked weak and disillusioned.

The retired carpenter could not comprehend the loss of a seven-bedroom family home he built himself from their life’s savings and all their belongings except a generator.

He estimated the loss to be $150,000. A fire, suspected of starting from the kitchen, gutted the house early Saturday at Namundri settlement in Sarava, Ba. A car was also destroyed.

Mr Bakar is still recovering from the ordeal.

“It was 3am Saturday morning when we found out that our house was on fire and lucky we could save everyone from the fire. There are six of us,” he said.

“It was sad to see that we only managed to save a generator which was donated to us but we lost all the other valuable items,” Mr Bakar said.

Mr Bakar said he was sad to see all his working tools burning.

“I couldn’t save anything that always assist me in my work,” he added.

When asked about the family’s plan Bakar said they would start building soon.

“If some donations come in then it’s good, if not then I will start rebuilding our house,” Mr Bakar said.

The National Fire Authority said “at 3.28am, Ba Fire Station received a fire emergency call and immediately responded.

Upon arrival at 3.37am, the Fire Team saw the corrugated iron and timber with partly concrete house fully engulfed in flames.

“The Fire Team used deliveries of water from their two Fire Trucks to extinguish the fire.”

NFA investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
