Mental preparation will be crucial for Suva when they face Nadroga in the Skipper Cup semifinals this weekend.

Coach Saiasi Fuli said not only do they need to play simple hard rugby but they also need to be in the right state of mind.

“You know when it comes to preparation, you do it physically but it also needs to be done mentally as well,” the former Flying Fijians halfback said.

“Having a positive mental attitude is what helped us in our game against Nadi, the boy’s maintained composure and had the right attitude to push them on. Playing against Nadroga will not be easy, it is never easy and playing in the semifnals will be a different playing field.

“With a lot of pressure around you to perform, players need to be in the right mind set to be able to handle the pressure. So that is why we don’t only concentrate on what is happening in the field but what is going on in the player’s mind.”

Assisting Fuli is former Flying Fijians and national sevens star forward Jope Tuikabe who was very vocal from the sideline against Nadi last Saturday.

Fuli said they are working on a three-year plan in building up the team which is why they have been exposing some of the players from the national Under-20 side.

“Last week we included around four under-20 players and they’ve done well and we’re looking to exposing them in competitions such as the Skipper Cup in order to develop them.

“Our aim is not solely on competitions and winning but developing the players of tomorrow and making sure they get the experience they need and game time also.

“The boys are looking forward to the semifinals and they will be working hard because going up against a team like Nadroga will not be easy.”
