Free Goitre Surgeries In Labasa

A Taiwanese mobile medical team will be providing free Thyroid Goitre Surgeries at the Labasa Hospital from today through to Friday.

A goitre or goiter is a swelling in the neck resulting from an enlarged thyroid gland.

Apart from free surgeries they will also be conducting training.

Team leader and General Surgeon Dr Hsin-Tien Tsai said their mission is to carry out thyroid operations.

“Patients with conditions including thyroid goitre and ear/nose/throat problems are urged to contact the surgical unit at the Labasa Hospital for an appointment,” Dr Tsai said.

The team flew to Labasa yesterday and will be at Labasa hospital today.

Dr Tsaid said this was her first time to Fiji while some of her team members have arrived into the country before.

“We hope to carry out more surgeries we can accommodate during the couple of days. This is a great partnership with the Fijian Ministry of Health.”

The team comprises of Dr Hsin-Tien Tsai (General Surgery), Dr Leh-Kiong Huon, Dr Ming-Hsu Chen (ENT doctors), two nurses and one coordinator from the Cathay General Hospital, a prestigious private hospital in Taiwan.

Since 2014, Cathay General Hospital assigned by the Taiwan Government has formed six Mobile Medical Teams to Fiji to provide free medical services in Suva, Kadavu, in Vanua Levu including Labasa, Nabouwalu, Savusavu, and Seaqaqa.

The team will also conduct surgeries in the Western division in Rakiraki, Ba, Tavua, Lautoka, Sigatoka, Korolevu, Lomawai, and Cuvu.
