Our UNIFIL Peacekeepers Recognised At Medal Parade
July 10
10:00 2017

Republic of Fiji Military Forces peacekeepers in Lebanon were thanked for their service during a medal parade recently.

The third company of the First Fiji Infantry Regiment is based at the new United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) 2 Operations Theatre close to the international border (IB) and Israeli border.

Our peacekeepers had arrived at the Operation Theatre on 17 October 2016, and will depart after a year – towards the end of October 2017.

The parade was praised from VIPs and invited guests as the best ever medal parade conducted by any contingent in UNIFIL since Fiji’s return to UNIFIL in December 2015.

Fiji’s first participation in Peacekeeping Operations started in 1978. Our participation lasted 24 years and the RFMF pulled out in December 2002, after the United Nations Headquarters decided to reduce the composition of the Force in the UNIFIL. On February 10, 2015 a Fiji Contingent returned to UNIFIL after six months of service in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in Syria (UNDOF).

The deployment laid the foundation of a Peace Support Operation within the RFMF.

Fiji has also held the position of UNIFIL Force Commander. It was held by Fijian President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, from 1998 to 1999.

The Fiji Multi Task Force Protection Unit which is currently serving under the UNIFIL has a strength of 146 personnel, 140 males and 6 females.

The Fiji Battalion served in UNIFIL from June 1978 – December 2002.

Here is what went down after the parade:

             Hidden talent were showcased from Cpl Karikaritu of Vanuakula, Nawaidina, Naitasiri, who painted on the ‘T’ Wall  scenic images of the beautiful Solevu coastline from Bua where his spouse originally hails from.

             The personal and arms drill displayed on slow and quick march was the toast of the show.

             Members of the Coy Dance Group and Hapkido display entertained the guests.

             The Fijian Community from Tyre which comprises of the eight members were present.

             Grog and lovo were served and the famous ‘Sukanaivalu Sigidrigi’ group started to roll as the third company  celebrated with the medal recipients and those on their first tour to UNIFIL.
