Special programmes covered under the 2017-2018 National Budget will assist 191 financially disadvantaged housing authority customers who had partly paid off their home loans.

This will prevent them from being under mortgagee sale, leaving them homeless.

People to be assisted will include retirees and people with medical conditions.

They will be assisted under the loan rehabilitation scheme – interest suspension and debt discounting.

Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment and Infrastructure, Parveen Bala outlined this during the budget debate in Parliament on Monday evening.

In addition, the $1 million rental subsidy grant will assist 949 financially disadvantaged rental customers in Public Rental Board housing estates.

This includes four housing estates in the Northern Division and in the Central Division and six in the Western Division.

Mr Bala stated that the ministry will also work closely with stakeholders to construct mixed-income multi-unit housing developments, construct affordable residential buildings and strata housing units.

“In doing so the emphasis will be on sustainable yet, affordable housing technology in design and build projects with development partners,” Mr Bala said.

Also through the Squatter Settlement Upgrading Programme, the ministry will continue to develop squatter settlements and regularise squatters to grant security of tenure.

This is an important, yet, often hidden part of providing mass affordable housing successfully undertaken by the FijiFirst Government, by regularising tenancy, Mr Kumar added.
