Police were yesterday called in to investigate a land dispute which had raised tension at Waidamudamu Settlement near Koronivia, Kings Road.

A roadblock had closed the main access road to the settlement.

Residents will now have to use an alternative route.

A resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said there were more than 288 houses in the settlement with more than 2800 residents using the access road.

“The Government started to develop the settlement last month and give land to the residents here.”

The land in question is allegedly leased by a Ilaitia Vakarau. He declined to comment.

Mr Vakarau’s consultant who did not wish to be named, claimed that the access road was on the lease of Mr Vakarau.

“Mr Vakarau was not aware of the road being used as the access road to develop the land,” the consultant said.

“All this happened without the knowledge of Mr Vakarau and he came to know about it last week when he saw some work being conducted on the land.

“Our lawyer wrote to all the relevant authorities including the Ministry of Local Government.

“We then took a copy of the letter to the Police today (Tuesday) and closed the access road which is the property of Mr Vakarau,” he said.

Questions have been emailed to the Ministry of Local Government which has yet to respond. Police are investigating.
