Higgins, Dayals and Fiji Roads Authority workers worked overnight from Tuesday until 4am yesterday to construct a temporary culvert crossing following a bridge collapse.

Fiji Roads Authority’s acting chief executive officer Robert Sen said: “A working crew of 29 people worked overnight on the  construction of the temporary crossing and the road improvement work on Naituyabia Road (detour route).”

“FRA is pleased with the fast turnaround time from the ground crews who worked to restore access for the communities along Maururu Road.”

Mr Sen said the maintenance team removed the bridge deck and at the same time constructed a temporary culvert crossing beside the collapsed bridge.

The new route can now be used by buses and cane trucks and is now open to all traffic.

As for a new bridge, Mr Sen said FRA was still holding discussions on the bridge replacement.

The Maururu Bridge buckled and collapsed under the weight of a ten wheeler truck on Tuesday.

The truck, carrying gravel, was on the bridge when the steel structure gave way causing the bridge to collapse.

The truck ended up on its side in the creek and the driver had to be freed by people who were nearby.

He was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.
