People stood by and watched a man snatch a chain and pendant from an elderly woman in broad daylight in Lautoka City yesterday despite calls for help.

Nirmala Lal, 72, and her husband, Surendra lal, 73, were still shaken hours after the incident at Tukani Street.

They could not believe that no one came to their rescue.

Mr Lal said: “Not one person gave chase to this thief as he ran off with my wife’s chain and pendant.”

The couple from Kermode Road had gone to the city to pay their telephone and electricity bills.

“As we came out of the Post Office at Rajendra’s Westfield building, we noticed this man following us,” he said.

“We carried on walking towards the Fiji Electricity Authority office and in front of the Catholic Church, the man suddenly came up and snatched the chain from my wife’s neck.”

Ms Nirmala said she felt something on her neck and within a few seconds her chain and pendant were snatched.

Mr Lal said he started yelling “butako” (theft) but people just stood and looked as the man made his way back in the same direction they came and towards the seaside.

“The thing I remember with him clearly was he had a grey shirt and he had a gold filling in his teeth.”

Mr Lal said he tried to follow the thief but he lost him.

The matter was reported to the Market Police Post and a Police officer said they were investigating the matter.
