Peni Tabua could only wish his mother was at his graduation ceremony yesterday.

The 24-year-old graduated with a Certificate in Food and Beverage Services during the Fiji National University’s (FNU) National Training and Productivity Centre, Department of Hospitality and Tourism graduation ceremony at FNU’s Namaka campus in Nadi.

196 students from Nadi and Sigatoka campuses graduated from various courses.

Mr Tabua, originally from Qaranivai Village in Labasa is the youngest of four siblings and his father is a farmer. His mother died two years ago.

To support his family, Mr Tabua started farming and to progress further in life, he came to the Western Division to stay with his eldest sister in Lawaki settlement in Lautoka.

Mr Tabua said: “I would like to thank God and my family for their support towards my studies. Without them I would not have been able to make it this far.

“My elder sister has paid my school fees and I thank her a lot for that. I always wanted to become a chef, therefore, I took up the Food and Beverage course,” he said.

But this is not the end for Mr Tabua because he will take up more courses on food and beverages.

His cousin, Mere Turaga, 32, said: “We are so proud with Peni’s achievement. Today was an emotional day for us because since my aunty passed away, we sisters have supported him to achieve his goals.”

Meanwhile, Rhonda Thelma Hicks, 18, who graduated with Mr Tabua aims to become a flight attendant one day.

“It was very important for me to take up the food and beverage course so that I am able to serve people and understand different types of food.

“This was only a first step for me, after working for some resorts or hotels, I will then go for a flight attendant’s course and fulfill my dream,” she said.
