The Vodafone Flying Fijians took time out in Apia yesterday and made a courtesy visit to Samoa’s Head of State Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi and his wife Masiofo Filifilia.

The Samoa Planet stated “as a mark of respect, the visitors politely declined the available chairs and instead sat on the floor as the Head of State graciously welcomed them to his home and to Samoa.”

Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi reminded the Fijians the relationship bonded between the Samoans and the Fijians.

“When you come to my home I count you as family.

“Not because of anything but the fact of what we share.

“We share common ancestry, common blood and common culture. The differences we have do not matter in rugby, but what matters is the commitment we have to the sport.

“We have to find our roots in our own culture because that is where we find who we are.

“Whatever the outcome of the game, you will always be welcome to my home.

“You are family to me.

“The bond that Samoa and Fiji share is deeper than we know.”

The conversation between the Head of State and his visitors, was an often light-hearted one, with Tupua referring to the recent news of his impending replacement.

“As you may have heard I’ve just been kicked out as Head of State, otherwise I could have guaranteed to you the fact you will be welcome here always,” he said with a chuckle.

Flying Fijians Captain Akapusi Qera joked back: “I wish you were still going to be the Head of State, otherwise we would have asked you for some free land.”

The Vodafone Flying Fijians play Samoa in the final game of the Pacific Nations Cup on Saturday.
