Anaemia is alarmingly on the rise and could be as prevalent as the Non-Communicable Disease if people do not watch what they eat, people have been warned.

Manager National Food and Nutrition Centre Ateca Kama said no one was exempted from anaemia according to their survey for children under five years, primary, secondary and adults.

Ms Kama made this comment during the Fiji National Policy for Nutrition and Food Security workshop at the Friendly North Inn in Labasa yesterday.

“The study confirms that 30 per cent of the men population in Fiji are anaemic, it is a big problem apart from NCD’s, diabetes, blood pressure,” Ms Kama said.

“These problems are determined by the way we eat and how we choose to eat,” she said.

“People need to be particular with their choice for food, take up more physical activity, minimise drinking and smoking.

“It would be better if these unhealthy habits are eliminated.

Ms Kama stressed that people need to consume more fresh foods and quit resorting to tinned foods.

She added that people no longer practised traditional food preparations which were much healthier.

“With the abundance of fruits and vegetables we can eliminate anaemia and other NCDs,” Ms Kama said.

NFFC hopes to strengthen nutrition and food security through strategies to address poor nutrition consumption in their mission to build a healthy nation.

Education, youth and sports agencies are working in partnership to carry out a nutrition survey in Fiji.
