What happened?

Navosa defeated Rewa 33-20 to win the 2017 Vodafone Vanua Championship at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.

Both teams have already secured spots in the 2018 Skipper Cup competition.

It was an entertaining first half from both sides.

Navosa drew first blood with a try to No. 8 Tevita Bulai and was converted by Nemani Muritovo.

Rewa fought back with a penalty to first-five eighth Alivereti Veitokani but Muritovo extended Navosa’s lead with a penalty.

Rewa’s backline displayed excellent rugby scoring two quick tries to scrumhalf Mesulame Kenatale and winger Isaia Naivalu.

Muritovo put Navosa in the lead with his third penalty.

Rewa was forced to play with 14 men after lock forward Waisea Rogoyawa was sinned binned. The Rewa backline strut their stuff again slicing the Navosa defence to score their third try through fullback Netava Koroisau.

Navosa forwards took charge even playing with 13 men after Sela Qaqa and Jone Hatobe were sin-binned for foul play.

They were awarded a penalty try, a penalty to Muritovo and the final try to Jonetani Yalayala converted by Muritovo to seal the win.

Comments; Navosa Captain Suli Degei said: “We thank God Almighty for the win, our sponsors and families. This win is dedicated to children at Sigatoka Special School.”

Rewa captain Alivereti Veitokani said: “I’m thankful that both teams from the Burebasaga confederacy battling it out in the Vodafone Vanua final.

“At the end of the day rugby is the winner.”
