Staff members at the University of the South Pacific Lautoka campus are also getting involved in the students’ second Climate Smart Journey- Reducing our Carbon Footprint programme launched yesterday.

They have put into action their theme Reducing our Carbon Footprint by bringing a pot plant each for their work stations.

This is to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions since GHG is a primary’ contributor to the global temperature rise of one degree Celsius preindustrial era.

“USP Lautoka campus has been organising and facilitating events to create awareness on climate change for some time now,” Campus director Pramila Devi said.

“Our committee then decided that it’s high time that we also do some hands and contribute in whichever way we can towards it,” she said.

“Among many ideas, the idea of pot plants came up and it was then decided that each staff bring pot plant to be kept in their work stations.

“This idea of the pot plant is just the beginning.

“Climate Change is everyone’s business. Therefore, it’s everyone’s responsibility to take action or create awareness on climate change.

The students’ Campus Climate Change team has been running several activities in the campus with students focus and engagement.

Their activity at present is focused on recycling, based on the 3R’s reuse, reduce, and recycle.

They are working with the Lautoka City Council (LCC) in the recycling of waste materials. USP Lautoka students had launched their first programme in May.
