Tacirua Residents Frustrated With Non-Collection Of Rubbish

Residents at the Tacirua new sub-division are frustrated because there has been no arrangement for the collection of their rubbish.

They have complained to responsible authorities yet there has been no response.

A man who wished to remain anonymous said they had bought the land and built their house four years ago, but have not had their rubbish collected since.

He said this is something that Housing Authority of Fiji needed to sort out before they sold the land to tenants.

Fiji Sun took a visit to the area this week and found out that people were dumping rubbish on the road side and in the nearby creek.

The uncontrolled dumping of rubbish is now a health, and environmental hazard to people living in the area.

“We have written to the ministries of environment, health and the prime minister’s office, but have had no response, no updates and no resolution.”

The residents said that Housing Authority collected all the garbage fees and other fees upon settlement of the lots

“But when it was time to honour their agreements, they have been blaming ministries, the health authority, and city council, when in fact this should have been sorted out even before the selling of the lots.”

“We need an enforcement team dedicated to tracking offenders on illegal dumping in the area.”

“People in government should do their job and stop wasting their time.”

Nasinu Town Council chief executive officer, Lute Berends, says the area is outside of their boundary.

Mr Berends said “It is not the responsibility of the Council to collect the garbage there. It’s the responsibility of Suva Rural Local Authority.”

Housing Authority chief executive officer, Punit Sethi, said the collection of garbage is outside the jurisdiction of the Housing Authority.

“It is therefore unlawful for HA to be involved in garbage collection.”

Mr Sethi said garbage collection falls under the jurisdiction of the local Municipal Authorities like the Town Council and the respective Rural Local Authority.

He adds in the case of Tacirua new subdivision, the issue of garbage collection boundaries between the Nasinu Town Council and the Suva Rural Local Authority is pending determination.

Moreover he said the Ministry of Health through the office of the Solicitor-General have drafted the garbage by-laws to address this pending issue.

He added that garbage by-laws are pending cabinet approval before gazetting and implementation.

Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala, yesterday confirmed that the area is under the Suva Rural Local Authority.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Rosy Akbar, said she was not aware of the garbage collection, but the authority would look into the matter.

There has been no arrangement for rubbish collection for the Tacirua new sub-division residents

Residents living along the Tacirua new sub-division in Nasinu have written a lot of correspondence and made a lot of requests on the issue.

Those who have moved in to the area in the past years said they have complained to the authority, the town and city councils and even Government about garbage collection, but still nothing has been done.

The Tacirua new sub-division comes under the Housing Authority of Fiji.
