Cuvu College’s Under- 18 rugby team once again stamped themselves as secondary schools rugby champions of the Western Division, defeating Ratu Navula College 10-3 in a hard- fought match at Prince Charles Park yesterday.

The win, in the Western Secondary Schools Rugby finals, sees them face Suva Grammar in the Coke Zero Deans Trophy quarterfinals on July 29, in Suva.

The Nadroga side displayed tenacious rugby with similar fast paced attacks that their champion district side is known for.

Ratu Navula opened the scoring with a penalty after Cuvu College had infringement within the 10 metres from the lineout but their joy was short-lived.

Cuvu College’s nippy first –five eighth Apakuki Raivoka levelled the score 3-3 as both teams go into the break tied.

Two minutes into the second spell, Cuvu College launched an attack after Ratu Navula had let the ball bounce from the kickoff in their 22- metre area.

Backpedalling and with no control, they were caught on their goalline and a loose ball was snapped up by Cuvu College halfback Suliasi Kurulo.

Raivoka converted to give his team a 10-3 lead which they held till the final whistle.

A scuffle which ended up outside the field almost brought an ugly side to the game and resulted in a player from each side being red carded and a Ratu Navula player given the yellow card.

The highlight of yesterday’s finals was the representation of RNC in the finals of all grades.

U15: Ratu Navula 6-3 Natabua High; U16:  NHS 29-14 RNC; U17: NHS 16-3 RNC; U19: RNS 16-3 Ba Provincial Freebird Institute.
