Fiji Football women’s national rep Francine Lockington died yesterday morning in Lautoka after a short illness.

The 17-year-old fell sick two months ago while she was in camp with the national Under-19 women’s soccer team while they were preparing for the 2017 OFC U19 Women’s Championship currently underway in New Zealand.

The news of her death came as a shock to family and friends.

“When I got the call from my brother I was devastated and shocked,” her aunt Charlene said.

“She was so young, so full of life and laughter and she really loved playing sports,” she said.

“She was also into music, singing and playing the guitar; just a beautiful person who everyone loved.

“Francine was like a daughter to me because she played football with my daughters Cecelia and Annette Nainima.

“It is such a sad time at the moment for everyone and I know Francine’s parents are devastated because she was the only child they had together.

“She was taken away too soon.”

Francine has certainly left a legacy behind as she won the Golden Glove last year in the OFC U17 Championships in the Cook Islands. She also won the Fiji FA Junior Female Footballer of the year.

Francine’s funeral will be held this Saturday at Vatulaulau in Ba.
