Nobel Peace Prize

Tomasi Taukave, Nasinu

The Nobel committee should award the next Nobel Peace Prize to the Prime Minister of Fiji Voreqe Bainimarama, Prime Minister of Tuvalu Emele Sopoaga and the President of the Republic of Kiribati Taneti Maamau.

These three gentlemen should be awarded for their fight against climate change.

Alcohol substitute

Narayan Reddy, Lautoka

With the ever increasing price on local beer and liquor, I was wondering how our youths are seen drunk on every corner of Lautoka.

I have seen youth and adults drinking at the bus station, seawall, Shirley Park, Churchill Park and the list goes on and on.

Finally I found out what the people were drinking, it was methylated spirits. People start to drink spirit because they cannot afford to buy beer and since the shops are advertising methylated spirits for sale which is cheap, people buy them.

I am just wondering the social and the health effects of methylated spirits on our society.

Close down the factories?

Allen Lockington, Lautoka

I was watching the Honourable Jone Usamate speaking live on the Parliamentary televised session.

The two biggest problems facing Fiji today are Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and climate change.

It was good, it made sense, I was glad, that the Government acknowledges these two evils.

He said that Government spent so much money on people in hospitals who had NCDs brought about by the use of cigarettes, alcohol and tobacco.

He also talked about the presence and absenteeism at work.

Some who were present couldn’t produce to the required level, because they had consumed too much alcohol.

When the good minister paused to take a breath, I said to myself, “Here goes, he will say – ‘Having said that about tobacco and alcohol we will now have no option but to close down the two factories.’

But he didn’t, so I went and mixed my grog and talked to myself.
