Team Fiji chef de mission Tomasi Tiko believes the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games will be a stepping stone for the Fijian athletes.

The team flew out of the country last night for the Bahamas where the games will be held on July 19-23.

“We expect these athletes to give their best and improve on their previous results and have a really good outing in the Bahamas,” Tiko said.

“Preparations have been good as they have been preparing for the last couple of months.

“It will be a new experience for most of these athletes, most of them are travelling and representing Fiji for the first time as well.

“A few of them have competed at the regional competitions so this is just another step up.

“A lot of the rugby players are competing in an international event for the first time so this is a stepping stone for them.

“We have 2020 Olympic Games in Japan and they can aim for that but this gives them the exposure they need in order to reach that level.

“This is not only for rugby, whether it is tennis or swimming, this will allow the athletes to aim higher and target other overseas events in the future.”

Fiji will be represented in swimming, athletics, tennis and rugby.
