Planning is very important for 19-year-old Vikash Goundar.

The University of the South Pacific first year student from Nalovo, Nadi is a recipient of a scholarship under the National Toppers Scheme.

He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in accounting and information systems.

“There are some who get so engrossed in leisure that they forego study time, for me I used to balance my time for all,” he said.

For him waking up early to study was a sacrifice he had to make on top of his leadership duties in school.

It was a difficult job, but that all paid off of course with the help of his family. Below is an in-depth interview with him:

Playing especially soccer, going on adventures which might include hiking or scouting

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY

Family of four.

Dad works at Narhari Electrical as Nadi- Branch Manager

HOW HAVE THEY SUPPORTED YOU?

They were always behind my back supporting me in every decision I took for the betterment of my future

GETTING A TOPPERS SCHOLARSHIP

YOU SCORED 367 AS YOUR AGGREGATE MARK IN THE FSFE, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?

I felt happy, to be honest I expected my mark to be in 370s since my FSLC mark was 382, but looking at other schools highest mark, I was satisfied. My parents were also happy with my mark so that never made me feel down on myself.

HOW DID YOU DO THAT?

It required sacrifice I would say. Waking up early to study especially when it was cold and on top of that coping up with leadership duties in school, which was a difficult job.

Having to study when family trips were planned was hard but most of the times plans got cancelled just to support me

TELL US THE SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS?

Planning things I would say. There are some who get so engrossed in leisure that they forego study time, for me I used to balance my time for all.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD DREAM, ARE YOU ANY CLOSER TO IT NOW THAT YOU’RE IN THE SCHEME?

Yes indeed, National Toppers Scheme has enabled me to work towards my goal without any difficulties especially financially I would say.

UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION ABOUT USP?

It was so big, like I was not used to such a big environment and I was looking forward to it.

WHAT DID YOU EXPECT ABOUT USP AND IS IT ANYTHING LIKE YOUR EXPECTATION(S)?

I thought I would have a wide range of things to explore here and I actually did.

WHAT HAS YOUR FIRST YEAR BEEN LIKE AT USP?

It has been tough. Being up-to-date with school work especially 8am lectures, where I had to wake up quite early but soon I adjusted and was good to go.

HOW DID YOU FARE IN THE LAST SEMESTER?

It was good. I am satisfied with my results.

OVERALL WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT USP’S FACILITIES?

I think it contains a wide range of facilities which students can benefit from.

FUTURE

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?

Depends, I may stay at USP working on the academic side or in other business environment where I’ll still be pursuing further studies at USP.

WHAT IS YOUR MAIN MESSAGE TO CURRENT SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS OR PROSPECTIVE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS?

Take the best advantage of the scholarship since we know many get attracted to the free life at the university level and tend to neglect studies. Sacrifice is highly needed but it all depends on them on how they take it.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE FOLLOWING YOUR STUDIES?

My dream is to try and become a chartered accountant and if I do then my last goal would be to earn enough to make a tour of the world, I would say.

ANY FINAL WORDS TO YOUR PEERS?

I wish them all the best in their studies and hope they prosper in life.
