More than $100,000 is owed by Fijians to the Government for costs of operations conducted by the Indian health team, Sahyadri Specialty Pacific Hospital Ltd Fiji.

This was highlighted in the 2016 Auditor-General’s Reports.

And, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is currently in the process of verifying the amount owed by patients to start the collection process.

The audit revealed that proper patient records had not been kept by the officers in charge and that a centralised database needed to be created to keep track of patients.

When the visiting Sahyadri comes for medical procedures, each patient is supposed to contribute up to $25,000 towards various procedures, the report says.

In some cases no money had been paid, but because of the seriousness of the patients’ conditions, operations and other medical procedures had been undertaken.

Now, 12 patients owe $105,554.
