Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel is in New Zealand to cheer up the Vodafone Fijian Under-19 football team as they prepare for their next game against Papua New Guinea on Friday.

Speaking from New Zealand yesterday, Fiji FA media liaison officer Avikash Chand said the team was going through difficult times as the news of their teammate and goalkeeper Francine Lockington death filters in the team camp.

“It’s a different atmosphere in the Fijian camp, the girls are all sad but they were fortunate to have Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel coming here and talking to these girls.

“Rajesh is reminding them to stay focus and finish their New Zealand tour on a high and every time they run out on the field they should play for one another and for their friend Francine,” Chand said.

Chand said the girls are confident ahead of their game against PNG at 3pm on Friday.

“They are dedicating all the game to her and they will be wearing black-arm bands,” Chand added.

Lockington will be laid to rest at her home in Vatulaulau, Ba next Wednesday.

The Fijians are currently third on the OFC U19 Women Championship standings with four points behind New Zealand who tops the table with nine points and PNG in second place with six points.
