The Pacific Cement Limited (PCL) has again paid an $11,000 a day penalty fee to the bulk carrier Tasman Sea that has been unloading 26,850 tons of clinker at Suva Port.

Pacific Cement Limited spokesman Sowani Tuidrola said the Tasman Sea arrived on June 19 and was unloading at anchorage at Suva Harbor because the Maipo River was still unloading 27,000 tons of clinker.

According to the agreement the Tasman Sea should have unloaded 26,850 tons of clinker within seven days of its arrival.

“Now that it is over seven days we will be paying the daily penalty fees of $11,000.00,” he said.

When asked why the bulk carrier could not unload within seven days he said it was out of their control.

Pacific Cement Limited had also paid a penalty fee F$750,000 to agents of Maipo River for breaching its unloading agreement.

The Maipo River had been in the country for two months.

He said the problems faced during the unloading were out of their control.

When asked if another vessel would be bringing clinker for the company he said they had enough supply till August.

He said they would now concentrate on the production of cement as the demand was high in Fiji.
