The Fiji Surfing Association has accessed the International Surfing Association’s Level 2 Coaching Course at Rendezvous Resort on July 20- 27.

International New Zealand presenter Lee Ryan will be in charge of the course as the six member squad to 2018 International Surfing Association World junior surfing titles in Japan are stepping up with preparations.

Fiji Surfing head coach Ian Portingale anticipates taking part as it will assist him to better the skills of his young surfing team.

“Coaches from Vanuatu, Samoa, New Caledonia, Guam, Kiribati and Fiji will converge on Rendezvous for what is expected to be an in-depth course on elite surf coaching,” Portingale said.

“If qualified, the coaches will be able to coach internationally up to the elite level.

“For Fiji it’s a chance to up-skill the coaches already conducting advanced coaching.

“Also, the lesson structure, safety, and their understanding of how to break a skill down will be loaned to ensure Fiji surfers have access to world class coaches.

“Preparations after the camp last week are going on well at the moment”

“We are currently having a squad of six in camp and we will reduce the number to three on July 25 and we will have the official presentation at the Suva Lighthouse.

“There will be a surfing competition event on the July 29 at the Royal Suva Yacht Club and we are going to name our final three surfers.

“We are still having facing some financial difficulties as we received a small amount of funding from the Fijian National Sports Commission which we are very thankful for.

“However, we still need more sponsorship for the team to travel to Japan since the flight fare is quite expensive and probably be over $12,000, plus entry fee alone is $500 along with accommodation as well.

“So, there’s a lot of cost that we are struggling to cover,”

Rip Curl Micro Grommet Series

Meanwhile, competition for this year’s Series will again lift the standard of Mirco Grommet surfers in Fiji.

In the under 10’s there are several 5 and 6 year olds entered already. In the Under-14’s the field has 2/3 filled already.

This year’s event has a free Family Fun Day that will see beach volleyball, beach touch, surf safety and an ocean environment activity, all to celebrate our ocean environment. By entering the free Family Fun Day one lucky person will win one nights accommodation for 2 at the Nadi Bay Resort, just for entering on line.

Natadola will be the scene for all these activities on 26th August, so get your entry in to either the Rip Curl Micro Series or the Family Fun Day OR both.
