Fijians will need to adjust to the weather quickly during the 2017 AFL International Cup in Melbourne, Australia on August 5-19, says Jiuta Vateitei.

The AFL Fiji national team vice-captain said they are all set do the country proud but they need to do the first things right from the start.

“I think one of the biggest factors is weather,”Vateitei said.

“What we have been told that it’s cold at this time of the year in Melbourne. It is something we are not used to.

“We will be in Melbourne a few days before the competition starts so we are hoping to acclimatise well before the first game.”

The team is in a tough pool with France, New Zealand, South Africa and Great Britain and Fiji.

“Preparation for the International Cup is going on pretty well, we have been focusing mainly on fitness and skills,” he said.

“We are ready to showcase what we Fijian players have and we just hope for the best because compared to the previous years, this year’s team is the most prepared.

“This is the most experienced team we will be taking to the International Cup out of the two outings we have had.

“We will be going up against some tough teams and we need to continuously be on our game because our main focus is to reach the top four.  We lost out on the quarterfinals in 2014 so this year we want to go a step up.”
