A mulching machine, new to the Fijian market, may just be the answer farmers are looking for.

Tivi Contractors Limited earlier this week showcased the new mechanised mulcher and stone crusher heavy duty machine to farmers in Nausori.

Lakena farmer, Ram Narayan after watching the display was already positive of his final output.

“With the use of the machine, I can increase the production on my farm.”

The machine handles three operations at one time – cutting, chopping and mixing with soil.

“Normally it takes me two months to plough at least an acre of land. I have to hire three different machines and it always takes time,” Mr Narayan, who has been farming for over 10 years, said.

Tivi Contractors Limited manager operations Fazeel Khan said the machine saves a lot of time and money.

“There’s no need for the farmers to go through the three processes separately and paying three different rates.”

During the demonstration, it only took 30 minutes to plough a quarter acre of land.

While the cost for hiring the machine is yet to be finalised, Mr Khan said it may cost around $60 to $70 an hour.

The machine was purchased from Australia for $140,000. Some parts were bought from China.
