Aspiring Chefs Considered For Scholarship

In a bid to promote and assist the development of the tourist industry, Master Class Fiji has launched its inaugural Master Class Fiji Culinary Scholarship this week.

Master Class Fiji, is a non-profit annual event involving executive chefs and hospitality related professionals supporting Fijians through modern culinary and hospitality related education.

All participating chefs, professionals and supporting organisations gathered at the Rhum Ba in Denarau last Thursday night.

“The purpose of this Non-Profit event is to promote and assist our Industry to develop local talent and provide a professional development opportunity,” Coliseum Managing Director Valentin Corchado said,

He added this approach is supported by the introduction of a progressive program of culinary and hospitality related demonstrations and the introduction of culinary scholarships at leading industry training organizations.

At first instance, Master Class Fiji is introducing the first culinary scholarship for high potential Fijian Female Chefs.

“Master Class Fiji has also gained the support of key industry stakeholders such as Tourism Fiji, Fiji Hotel and Tourist Association, APTC and FNU,” he said.

“The intention of this scholarship is also to develop and support our female’s chefs in the industry to become future managers and even executive chefs.

“This three months culinary scholarship at the renowned culinary school Le Cordon Bleu Sookmyung Academy, Seoul, South Korea commences in October 2017 and includes tuition cost, return flights, accommodation, medical insurance and meal allowance.”

In recognition for their immense talent and hard work all students received the first Master Class Fiji 10”cook knives kindly donated by The Coliseum and Green Leaf.

“Over the course of the next three months, Master Class Fiji will continue with a progressive approach to identify the female winner of the first Master Class Fiji Culinary Scholarship at this world renowned culinary school.

“Subject to the standards, skills of the final recipient of the scholarship and strict guidelines of the Culinary Academy, the 2017 Master Class Fiji Scholarship will be available in Basic, Intermediate or Advance Cuisine or Pastry & Confectionery disciplines,” he said.

Mr Corchado added the selection criteria will be based on a series of cooking demonstrations and judging carried out by some of the Master Class Fiji participating chefs and industry professionals.

Furthermore cooking demonstrations and eliminations will take place in Nadi, Sigatoka and Suva. Finalists will participate in a formal gala dinner. The winner of the scholarship will be announced during the course of this dinner.
