A normal Saturday evening family gathering was disrupted following a tragic accident in Matasawalevu in Dreketi, Macuata.

Jadu Ram, 59, died instantly when an oncoming vehicle ran into the vehicle he was travelling in.

His son, Praveen Chand, 34, never imagined in his life that he would carry his dead father out of a wrecked vehicle.

“My uncle, Jwala Prasad, was driving my father to my house to deliver rice around 5pm,” Mr Chand said.

“I saw the vehicle entering my compound when a land cruiser with two passengers heading towards Labasa bumped straight into the side where my father was sitting.

Mr Prasad said he was shocked and in great pain as the steering wheel badly hit his chest from the impact.

“When I turned to see my brother he was motionless and covered with blood,” the 55-year-old man said.

“The two passengers from the cruiser were badly injured. The Police took all of us to Dreketi Health Centre.”

Mr Ram’s wife, Leela Wati, 55, who witnessed the accident, ran to the scene as her house was metres away.

“I can’t believe my husband left us suddenly in a painful way,” the mother of five children said.

“I heavily depended on my husband who earnestly worked as a rice and vegetable farmer. He took great care of me and it is so sad I have to live the remaining days without him.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said a vehicle driven by a 26-year-old mechanic of Lekutu, Bua, allegedly bumped into the other vehicle.

“The passenger died instantly allegedly due to the impact of the accident,” Ms Naisoro said.

“Meanwhile, the driver and his two passengers are admitted and under observation at Labasa Hospital. Investigations continue.”
